I'm guessing he played banjo and didn't try to be funny.

Some quotes from Let's Get Small.

"....they give you a balloon and make you blow it up.....if you can get inside the balloon they know you're small."

"Gave my cat a bath last night. A lot of people say you can't give a cat a bath, but my cat loved it. I got a little hair on my tongue....."

"...be oblong and have you knees removed."

While I enjoy bluegrass music, Steep Canyon Rangers(w/ Steve) just don't do it for me because I can't take Steve Martin seriously. Like Bill Murray in Razor's Edge....I'm just waiting for a punch-line. Keep your day job Steve.

Right. I agree he has talent. However, there is no doubt his celebrity has opened doors that have remained closed for more talented artists.

Like when Michael Jordan played minor league baseball. Yeah, the games were sell-outs, but not to see him show-off his baseball skills, but rather to catch a glimps of a legend hogging the spotlight from the guys who belonged there.

Steve doesn't hog the spotlight, but I think the analogy holds water.

Boy I dunno about that. There's that photo from '74 where he's standing with Jerry and that guy from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band John McEuen, all plucking away. He was a comedy nobody at that time and it just seems if he's a peer to those two guys at that point in *their* careers, he's a player of some repute.

I've been to many bluegrass fests as seen/heard my share of banjo pickers. He's better than competent, but he would not be standing front and center if he wasn't Steve Martin. There are thousands of extraordinary musicians NOT fronting bands on Austin City Limits. His movie-star/comic face sells. That's all I'm saying.

He's an interesting guy. He full out said on the Charlie Rose show he was bored with show business- to explain why he now devotes his time to writing (he was on the show pimping his novel), collecting art and playing music.
I was just left to wonder if he was really bored or if that's what Hollywood types say when the big movie role offers stop coming in.

What's your opinion of Bela Fleck?

I think Steve is a renaissance man - well-rounded in all the arts. He's written close to 30 novels and novellas, as well as pieces for the New Yorker, and is considered a serious author. Sure his name opens doors for the band, but when I saw him on late-night a few years back he was quite content to let some of the other players front the band, and they weren't shabby. In other words, not a novelty act. A guy who's that smart must have realized pretty quick what a dead-end running around with an arrow in your head is. His film career spans from 1979 through the present, some of which he shares writing and producing credit on as well.

Does anyone know the name of this pretty obsure movie Steve Martin did years ago.He played a frugal carpenter who horded gold pieces and was robbed .The sub plot was he was trying to gain custody of his daughter and was continually harassed by a wealthy politician. The piano themed score was amazing and the catch at the end was where a body was supposed to sunk in an old quarry lake, the lake was drained, the criminal was dead in the car and his gold that was robbed from him was found in the car.I'm no critic but it was both a crime story a tearjerker and eventual happy ending movie.A Baldwin brother was the thief, and Gabriel Byrne was the rich dude. Simple Twist Of Fate was the title wow what a memory I have.2 1/2 stars rainy day movie.

"different strokes for different folks"

Steve, though by no means a Bela Fleck, is an accomplished banjo picker. He may be a talented comedy writer, but as a stand-up he leaves much to be desired.
